In October 2009, Riot Games released their first game called League of Legends. It is a DotA inspired game. My then university group mate Tuan and I started playing it and had some fun with it. Shortly after we found some log files created by the game. When we looked through it we found a lot of information about the matches we had played. We dicided to create a parser to extract these information and save it in a database and easily display it. Shortly after we dicided to try and make this public such that other people with similar interests could use it as well. The 25th of December 2009 we launched what came to be known as LoLBase.net.
Since then it has moved fast. We added the possibility of signatures using the data we had collected and shortly after the usage of LoLBase.net boomed. It quickly became the most popular thing I have ever been part of with thousands of visitors and over 10,000 log files uploaded every day. It got so bad that we simply had to move to a better server. For this we got help from the community who generously donated money. Together with an ad that were only displayed for a couple of weeks we collected $800+ for the new server!
During the summer 2010 Riot Games started Season 1 of the ranked games in League of Legends. This ment heavy changes to the log file which forced us to have a downtime for about three weeks, due to holidays and other real life related stuff. When it was finally fixed other real life problems arised but we hope to make this up some day.
